of silence are now imposed on motorists. Oh, & they have a Ruskin
Spear which is no worse than a Ruskin Spear. I'm afraid that
it is much less lazy to characterise such a couple who avoid
the extravagant imbecility of the people at Clacton. One of
the Holy Year stories concerned the holy steps: at the bottom is a
multi lingual notice pointing out that in the view of the pious
nature of the journey upon one's knees ladies must wear suit-
ably long dresses. At the top of the stairs (which are, of course,
literally crowded all day with pilgrims) a priest stands urging
pilgrims to travel faster, faster in view of the waiting masses ...
People receive the Pope's blessing absolutely loaded with
Rosaries which will be precious as a result (for friends
as business?) ...
I shall be glad when this evening's lecture is over & I
can relax (tho' I've lectures the Friday & Saturday - 2 on
Sat.).
O dear the train is very bumpy now so I shall
return to Marcel Clarke - or perhaps to Kenneth
Proust.
You are always in my thoughts
I love you I love you
